When I was a young boy I always told people that I wanted to be a teacher. I did not always treat my teachers as one should, and it surprised people when I told them that. In the first grade I presented all my GI Joe toys and visited Marine recruiters in order to get some posters. This may have been an early clue to my future career. I spent 20 years in the Marines, mostly in logistics and a stint in recruiting. I always felt great helping others with their personal problems and their intended direction in life. As I progressed up the ranks, I had the opportunity to set the example of being open minded and accepting of an individuals plan for the future. I always challenged the Marines under my charge to constantly seek improvement in their life professionally, emotionally, spiritually, physically, and to further their education. As I look back, this was the beginning of my future profession as a Marriage and Family Therapist. 

Therapy Types

  

Welcome to my therapy practice! I'm David Butters, and I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). 


I'm here to provide a safe and supportive space where you can explore your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while working towards meaningful change and personal growth. With a foundation in evidence-based practices, i integrate various therapeutic approaches to tailor our sessions to your unique needs. 


Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) is  designed to help couples improve their relationships and create deeper emotional bonds. 


CBT focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors that may be contributing to emotional distress. 


DBT, on the other hand, emphasizes emotional regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and mindfulness skills to help you navigate challenging situations more effectively. 


ACT is designed to help you cultivate psychological flexibility by accepting difficult emotions and experiences while taking steps towards living a values-based life. 


Finally, EMDR is a specialized technique used to process and heal from traumatic experiences, reducing the impact of distressing memories and improving overall well-being. I believe in fostering a collaborative and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, where we work together to identify your goals and develop practical strategies to overcome obstacles and achieve them. 


My approach is rooted in empathy, respect, and cultural sensitivity, recognizing the importance of your unique background and experiences. Whether you're struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, or any other challenges, I'm here to support you on your journey towards healing and self-discovery. Together, we can explore your strengths, build resilience, and develop the tools necessary to navigate life's ups and downs with greater confidence and clarity. I look forward to working with you and helping you create positive and lasting change.
