Values play a central role in ACT. Here’s how ACT and values are connected:

- Committed Action: Once values are clarified, ACT encourages individuals to take committed action toward those values, even in the face of discomfort or adversity. It recognizes that pursuing meaningful goals can sometimes be challenging, but it’s worth it for the sake of a fulfilling life.
- Psychological Flexibility: ACT aims to increase psychological flexibility, which is the ability to adapt to different situations and respond effectively to life’s challenges while remaining true to one’s values. It involves learning to defuse from unhelpful thoughts and emotions and to choose actions that align with values.
- Values-Based Goals: When setting goals in ACT, individuals are encouraged to create objectives that are directly related to their values. This makes it more likely that they will be motivated and committed to pursuing these goals.
- Measuring Progress: ACT may involve ongoing assessment and reflection on whether one’s actions and choices are in harmony with their values. If not, adjustments can be made to realign with what truly matters.
